Thread: Exploring what facilitation can be

Default Exploring what facilitation can be

This is intentionally broad, I have some ideas on what may take place, what it can be, and I'm interested in all ideas from others, facilitators and clients.

What is your sense of what goes on during clean facilitation?

    Default Broader than Broad ...

    Hi Olive,

for the client, for the fac, for both?
depending on the kind of clean ... huge variations ... with emergent being cleaner than clean - in David's words ...

    For the client:
    1. What happens with symbolic modelling is that the first strangely-scaled layer of structures are modified to create a better reality for the client, without undoing the deeper structures of the attractors behind/within the metaphors.

    2. What happens in clean space (assuming the therapeutic work, not the coaching level), is that some deeper structures shift and are "integrated/migrated" as the selves align with the present body.

    3. In Emergence, the structures are undone and the personal collective becomes more 'whole', until unity consciousness emerges and all the selves align with the body, becoming one.

For the facilitator, in emergence, I believe the facilitator learns about the messages or signals that the client brings.

Olive: "What is your sense of what goes on during clean facilitation?"

You know when facilitation is clean is when it is in pace with your thinking and encourages you to explore your thoughts further, without new information being added other than from your own memory and senses.

Thank you both very much for adding your thoughts, both helpful perspectives.

Is there a sense of clean facilitation from the facilitator perspective? Or a sense of what goes on for both client and fac together as a system?

    Hi Olive,

Interesting questions: the nub of "clean" is to minimise the intrusion from the facilitator and to minimise the transference between, and although impossible, the sense of "how clean" remains IMO. The "together as a system" includes such transference mechanisms; this is going to be personal to each, and I'm unsure if an archetypal system would be common to all clean faciliators - if fact i'm sure it would not be.

Coming back to your original point on "what clean facilitation can be", I was disturbed by how "NLP" clean was becoming at the conference in 2009, from the seminars I witnessed, and I worry that the real ethos of David's work is being lost in such a wave of "mixing of therapies". I believe David's search for "the ultimate in clean" arrived with his clean question cards, where the client asked themselves their own questions, and the facilitator just gave a card with the question on. I strongly believe in DIY-clean process for most emergent work, and the use of an "asker of a sequence of questions" for when a client needs to maintain an emergent flow, or sometimes when the clients needs to acquire a pattern before internalising its use. Ultimately, the clean approach is achieved by the facilitator becoming non-projecting, and that, requires extensive emergence IMO, which is why i focus on retreats addressing exactly that; the rest then flows easily.
