Caitlin,
I loved the BBQ metaphor--it has everything a person could want. A friendly atmosphere, variety, sense of gathering together, freedom and flexibility whilst within some boundaries, and there's something there for everyone. I also smiled at the image of Phil in an apron, rushing around keeping the grills clean, phoning for mushrooms and beer, etc.
This metaphor really captures the social aspects of the forum (functioning at its best). I like it much better than my more formal image of counterpoint--that's a bit more structured and implies that things are already scripted and people must stick to their parts, doesn't give a sense of freedom and flexibility.
From the way you described the BBQ, I'll bet you're a good hostess. ;-)
Cheers,
