There are ninety miles of white sand stretching up to Cape Reinga - the Pakeha name for the sacred Maori site from whence the soul begins its journeying home. There is a sign post indicating the number of miles to London, to Los Angeles, to Paris - to .........

It is there that the sea meets the ocean and their clashing forces defy the navigator and it is from there that David will begin yet another journey of discovery. I doubt he will follow the sign posts and I imagine he will just begin studying the molecular structure of the waves regardless of the wildness of their ways. I hope the spirits of the ancient seafarers are with him, guiding him and caring for him. From the shore, from the stable ground I wish him well and express my deepest gratitude to him - David, shaman - healer of souls.

Death of David

Sorrow lurks, sneakily
around the edges of my eyes.
My soul, an open wound, weeps.
Loss spreads its wings,
Hovers, delicately,
Casting shadows on memories:
the giggles in the garden,
the freezing cold,
a gyroscope.
Gratitude wells up,
clogging somewhere in the throat.
Words fall in platitudes on willing ears.

It is thus.
And no more.
Landscapes unknown
for your soul to explore.
Journeying through wind and sea,
Let your ancestors embrace you.
And in one pristine moment,
Be, at One, David,
Healer, Shaman, Provider of Grace.
