Hi, can anyone give me a reference for the often-quoted research that concluded we use around four metaphors a minute in conversation, please?

Judy, This is the reference on Penny & James' site http://www.cleanlanguage.co.uk/LearningMetaphors.html - Susan R Robinson, Birkbeck College, University of London, 11 November 2000.

I've tried searching for the original, but to no avail.

Just found a reference that suggests six metpahors a minute in ordinary spoken language!

Raymond R Gibbs Jr, "Categorisation and Metaphor Understanding" Psychological Review 99, no 3 (1992). Quoted in the excellent "How Customers Think" by Gerald Zaltman (2003) p37
