View Full Version : And is there a direction..?

And when you get what you want or need, then what happens?
And when [...], what kind of you would you be?

Is there a direction that would like you to go to? And what do you know from there?
Assuming that your questions Is there a direction that would like you to go to? And what do you know from there? are examples of potential CS questions to be used with regard to direction, I think they would be interesting to try out.
At first glance, the concept of Direction could be seen to imply a HERE, a THERE (perceived from HERE) and a BETWEEN (especially if one has seen David's Space of A, Space of B and Space Between C model). Working within such a HERE, THERE and BETWEEN model, I would probably ask about all three, e.g.
And what do you know from HERE (space #1)?
Does this space (space #1) have a name?
Find another space, etc.
Does this space (space #2) have a name?
And what do you know from HERE (space #2)?
What's BETWEEN (space #1) and (space #2)?
Thinking about what Lynn says though: ...take time to notice and explore what is actually happening in the here and now... an old saw comes to mind: 'To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour.' Robert Louis Stevenson.
What might we ask if someone conceives of a HERE and a DIRECTION but not a THERE? In other words, someone who doesn't have (and maybe even doesn't want) a goal in mind, a somewhere to arrive at, but does have a sense of which DIRECTION to head in?
And is there a DIRECTION that you are drawn to?
And what do you know from HERE about DIRECTION?
Go towards DIRECTION [NB: an imperaative, not a question, similar to 'Find a space...']
[Alternatively:] And when you go towards DIRECTION, then what happens? [client moves]
And AS you go to DIRECTION [while they are moving] what do you know (now)?
[When client stops] And what do you know from HERE?
Does this space have a name?
Everyone who uses Clean Space (and if not, why aren't you?!), why not experiment and report back?

Thanks Phil, you are really helpful! Note however, that the question "Is there a direction that you are drawn to" is a question to A, whereas "Is there a direction that would like you to go to" is a question to B.

Last Sunday I travelled back from Normandy, that never seems to want to let me go. So I drove South-East a bit, just to confuse it. I couldn't decide whether I needed to go North-East or North-West, so I went North to have a choice of both for a while. I wondered if I was going away from something or going towards something. Usually just going anywhere makes me happy.
As I was driving I lost track of where I was and didn't have a clue as to what direction I was going anyway. Then this road-block confused me: I didn't necessarily have to go 'there', so why deviate from the route? But then I realised I'd probably get stuck if I didn't follow the signs. I tried North-West first and stood on the shore near Calais watching the ships go by: they didn't make a choice either and just stayed in between the white cliffs on both sides, whereas the ferries sailed to and from them. Then I drove North-East to my home away from home.

Once at North-East I couldn't decide whether to go North-West after all, which would now be going South-West. My common sense said 'don't even think about it', but my body woke up early and was ready to move. Since I'd hardly been unpacked it was easy to pick up the laundry (the great thing about home is that it has excellent laundry facilities) and go. I drove South through a dark and rainy Holland. The sun rose above the horizon in Belgium and accompanied me through the hazy fields that slowly turned pink and purple. An amazingly bright rainbow welcomed me.
The ferry spinned around a bit in the harbour before setting sail and with the other boats moving relatively to ours I didn't know whether we moved or not. Then I drove West until dark, just to find, the next morning, much to David's and my surprise: a map of Normandy on the wall!
Hi Corrie
So far in my own mind I have not been able to connect your two posts to the emerging topic of this specific thread - I may be missing something of course. Perhaps you could do so for us or alternatively I can move them to a new thread that can develop separately, maybe under Clean Space (I'm guessing?), depending on how you believe they relate to the cleanforum topics. Thanks Corrie.
This has now been done and this thread is it.

In fact, I am thinking of starting a 'forumblog' section where people (including me!) can publish their loosely clean-space/clean-language related musings that don't necessarily expect or require an answer, somewhat in the style of a blog (weblog) and still within the cleanforum.
I would be interested to know whether members would welcome this idea.

Hi Phil,
My contribution was meant for the discussion on Modelling wanting. My clean question there was: "Is there a direction that would like you to go to? And what do you know from there?" You asked: "Everyone who uses Clean Space (and if not, why aren't you!), why not experiment and report back?" So I did.
P.S. This thread developed to the CS, but, as we discussed with J&P this summer, there is no real distinction between CL and CS, only the client's logic counts, as Penny stated.
